Meet Cecelia, a 31 year old lady with two kids who made the tough decision to go back to primary school to pursue her studies. She is now in grade 7.

I met Cecelia the first day I started going to Mtsiriza Primary School for after- school writers club. She could not stop staring and smiling at me; she was very shy just like all the other girls. They were so afraid to speak and read in English. At the end of the day, I knew that Mtsiriza School was going to be a very challenging teaching experience for me, but at the same time, a lot of fun.

The more I visited Mtsiriza,...

Writing inspired by ordinary objects:  a recharging cable

I look at the recharging cable with a bit of amusement.  It is such a major part of our lives in this modern technological world!  Using it is now a routine.  I now charge phones, power banks and the computer every night.  When we have a power cut and things were not charged, our lives are in disarray.  We are behind on communication with the rest of the world.  Heaven forbid that we could talk to one another directly and meaningfully!

It makes me...

From This Vantage Point

From this vantage point, a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a sibling, a friend, counsellor/mentor…sound a lot right?  Too many hats!  When do you pick one and let the other go?  Do you wear all of them?  Do you play a balancing act?  Oooh the pressure!  But, is it really?

What determines the pressure or lack of it mmm?  A good question that is!!  Okay, if it is up to me to determine what is pressure and what is not, then I will choose to not have pressure.  Yes, that I believe is the...

The Quiet Noise

When everything is quiet, I smile, I feel, remember and enjoy the quiet. But then it’s not. Now I only hear more clearly the noise. Not the big noise, but the deep whisper that screams, “Let me out so I can wail, so they can hear and understand, so they can know that I’m not quiet, only still; that I’m not soft, only gentle; that I’m not sure, only calm.”

Exhale. So heavy. No, the tears will not be let out. Not today. We don’t know how much time we have and so we may not be able to stop when the crowds return, when d...

Written in the Nairobi, Kenya workshop

If I were to tell you of the moon and how she wakes me in the night with that cloud of brightness falling over my bed, would you be able to feel the hush of her shimmery light, or know the deep place it stirs in me when I wake to that sight?

If I were to tell you of the smell of dry grass when the rain finally begins to fall and the straw-like blades give way under heavy, plump-round drops, would you feel the quickening of pulse, the pleasure and relief that rushes in when drought is broken?

     If I were...

The February writing workshop in Nairobi was exciting, enjoyable and liberating. In planning for it, I thought that participating on the first day was only to help me better understand how it would help the girls we work with through One Lamb. This changed when I listened to why the other ladies had decided to come for the workshop - a light switch went on in my head and the thought dawned on me - wow, I also loved writing and I too could grow from this. Great start to the day.

Lisa was clear about how the AWA method works and gave useful examples to help us understand...

VoiceFlame recently had the joy and privilege of carrying the AWA torch into Kenya! Over the course of the last couple of years, we've been in contact with Ciru Mutura, a passionate and capable local woman who had heard about our work in Malawi and was interested in implementing something similar among the teen girls she serves in One Lamb community. Timing and logistics finally came together and I, Lisa (an AWA certified workshop leader and VoiceFlame representative) accepted the invitation to lead workshops, organized and hosted by Ciru, for three wonderful groups o...

Do you remember the thrill of being a child on the eve before a momentous birthday or perhaps your first day of school? Maybe you recall the sensation of butterflies fluttering in your stomach or the feeling that anything is possible. That’s how I feel as I write my first blog post in preparation for unveiling VoiceFlame’s new website. I am a kid again, overjoyed to share our story with you and introduce you to our team and the remarkable girls who attend our writing workshops and camps.

First, I’d like to express my gratitude to those who made 2017 such a fruitful ye...
